This bronze Medieval pendant dating from the 13th century measures 29mm x 35mm and was excavated near the town of Dunmo in the United Kingdom. Showing a quatrefoil outline, the central device shows a scallop shell motif which originated from Saint James and was a popular design worn on pilgrim badges during the Medieval period. The English surname of "Pilgrim" finds its origins when people went on pilgrimages to either local holy shrines or the Holy Land.To see some similar Medieval pendants, go to pages 370-391 in BENET'S ARTEFACTS OF ENGLAND & THE UNITED KINGDOM , second edition, 2003. Condition: excavated condition with surface pourosity; attachment loop on top is broken; most of the silvering is worn away.I showed this pendant to an expert on Medieval jewelry and he stated that this particular badge with a scallop shell motif is quite scarce .Make sure you check out our other relics by List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.
