Hello everyone! You are looking at a 1:1250 scale Albatros model of the Chandris Lines SS Britanis ocean liner. Originally launched on October 10, 1931 as the SS Monterey, she was one of four ships in the Matson Lines "White Fleet". The SS Monterey was built to promote travel to Hawaii and for Pacific ocean liner service (Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia). During World War 2 she was used as a troopship and fought at the action off Cape Bougaroun under the name USAT Monterey. She also steamed to Hawaii from San Francisco in December 1941 with 3,349 fresh troops , returning with over 800 casualties of the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war, the SS Monterey was scheduled to be refit, but the funds ran dry and she sat idle for 5 years. Matson Lines bought the old mothballed SS Monterey back from the US Government in 1956 and renamed her SS Matsonia. After another name change and years of dwindling passenger service, Chandris Lines bought the vessel (in 1970) and renamed her SS Britanis. She was greatly modified to hold 1,655 passengers and re-entered service in 1971. By 1974 she saw service as a cruise ship in the Caribbean during the winter and Europe in the summer. In 1994, the SS Britanis was chartered by the US Government as a floating barracks for military personnel at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 1998 she was sold to AG Belofin Investments of Liechtenstein and renamed Belofin 1. She capsized and sank on the way to the scrapper in October 2000. This model is in very good condition with the exception of a very small broken mast (antenna?) over the rear funnel (I do have the broken piece which could be easily glued back on-I will of course include it in shipping) and a paint chip on the bow (which you can see in the pictures). It measures 6 1/4 inches long x 3/4 inch wide. It does come with it's original box. I have owned this model for over 15 years and it's now time for someone else to enjoy it. This model would make a nice addition to anyone's collection. All care will be taken when packaging for shipment. Thanks for looking!
