Hello everyone! You are looking at a 1:1250 scale Mercator model of the RMS Queen Elizabeth ocean liner. Being owned by Cunard, she was built in the mid 1930's by John Brown and Company at Clydebank,Scotland. While she was being built, she was simply known as "Hull 552", but when she was finally launched in 1938, she was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth. With a design that improved upon her running mate Queen Mary, she was a slightly larger ship, the largest passenger ship ever built at that time and for 56 further years. She first entered service in 1940 as a troopship during World War 2, and it was not until1946 that she served in her intended role as an ocean liner. With the decline in the popularity of the transatlantic route, both the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth were replaced by the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1969. The Queen Elizabeth was retired from service in 1968 and was sold to a succession of buyers. She was finally sold to a Hong Kong businessman Tung Chao Yung who intended to convert her into a floating university cruise ship. She caught fire under mysterious circumstances in 1972 and was capsized by the water used to fight the fire. In 1973 she was deemed an obstruction and was partially scrapped where she lay. This model is in near mint condition with the exception of two paint chips at the bow(please see pictures). This model measures 9 15/16 inches long x 1 1/8 inches wide and comes with it's original box. I have owned this model for over 20 years and it's now time for someone else to enjoy it. This would certainly be a "cornerstone" for anyone's collection. All care will be taken when packaging for shipment. Thanks fo looking!
