Hello everyone! You are looking at a 1:1250 scale Mercator model of the United States Lines SS America ocean liner. Launched in August 1939, she became the flagship of the United States Lines and made her maiden voyage in August of 1940. She was designed by the noted naval architect William Francis Gibbs and she carried many names between her construction and her 1994 wrecking. She served as the SS America (carrying this name three times during her career), the USS West Point, the SS Australis, the SS Italis, the SS Noga, the SS Alferdoss and the SS American Star. In 1941, she even carried (obvious unknown at the time by the crew), two Nazi spies from the Duquesne Spy Ring. Both men were eventually charged with espionage and sent to prison for 10 years and 16 years respectively. During the war, she carried a total of over 350,000 troops- which was the largest capacity of any Naval troopship of the War. She served the US LInes from 1946 to 1964 and was then sold to the Chandris Lines where she served from 1964 to 1978. A series of several owners followed (Including Chandris again) and she was eventually wrecked at Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. As of February 2010, about 15-20 of her bow remains above the water. This model is in near mint condition ( with the exception being a small paint chip on the starboard wing of the bridge- you can see it in one of the pictures) and comes with it's original box. It measures 7 inches long x 7/8 inches wide. I have owned this model for over 15 years and now it's time for someone else to enjoy it. All care will be taken when packaging for shipment. Thanks for looking!
