From an estate in Tuxedo New York, this very large, 12" wide by 16" long "photomechanical (halftone)" reproduction, looks like a photograph, is " Sky ", a photograph of a cloud and the sun with no reference to the earth. This particular photo is from the Eastman House collection's " Stieglitz Memorial Portfolio", Lakeside Press Chicago 1947 . Our research indicates that t were 1500 of these portfolios made. The photograph was taken in 1931. We will be listing other Steiglitz photographs today and tomorrow. This stunning photograph is number 16. The image size is 3 5/8" wide by 4 9/16" high . It is printed on photographic paper. Under a jeweler's loupe we can see dots but they are not the standard lithographic dots and look more like a matrix. Steiglitz photographs in this collection are referred to as being photomechanical (half tone) reproductions. T are a very few subdued wrinkles, more like tiny ripples, in the print that can only be seen when the print is held sideways to catch the light and a more, barely, visible one in the upper right margin near the corner. T is an edge tear, 13/16" just above the 16, the finish of the paper is less glossy than the others, and t are two minuscule dots in the photo's finish that can be see under the loupe . None of these detract from the beauty of this photo. "His refusal to encapsulate her (O'Keeffe's) personality into a single image was consistent with several modernist ideas: the idea of the fragmented sense of self, brought about by the rapid pace of modern life; the idea that a personality, like the outside world, is constantly changing, and may be interrupted but not halted by the intervention of the camera; and, finally, the realization that truth in the modern world is relative and that photographs are as much an expression of the photographer's feelings for the subject as they are a reflection of the subject depicted. Stieglitz's series of photographs of clouds, which he called Equivalent s ( 49.55.29 ), were made in a similar spirit, embodying this last idea perfectly. The cloud pictures were unmanipulated portraits of the sky that functioned as analogues of Stieglitz's emotional experience at the moment he snapped the shutter." We will combine shipping. Museum Purchase GEH NEG: 48937 67:0120:0016 " Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer who was instrumental in the acceptance of photography as an art form alongside painting and sculpture. He was born on January 1, 1864, in Hoboken, New Jersey to prosperous German Jewish immigrants, the eldest of six children. In 1881, Stieglitz's father moved the family to Berlin so that Alfred could receive a German education. Stieglitz began studying mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule in Berlin, but after developing his first photograph in 1883, he changed his concentration from engineering to photochemistry. During the summer of 1886, Stieglitz traveled throughout the European countryside taking photographs. These included many photos of peasants working on the Dutch seacoast as well as undisturbed nature within Germany's Black Forest.
