131 Stratford Ontario Festival Playbills - 1955 - 2000

Welcome!

One Hundred Thirty One (131) Stratford Festival (Ontario) Playbills, 1955-2000 .

On offer is a group of 131 playbills for productions at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada. The playbills are from the years 1955 - 2000, representing seasons Three (3) through Forty Eight (48). Most, but not all, are for productions of Shakespeare's plays. They include productions at the Festival Theatre, the Avon Theatre, Third Stage, and the Tom Patterson Theatre (I think the last two may be the same venue), most being from the Festival Theatre. T are some years missing, and t are not complete playbills for any given year with the possible exception of a few from the 1970's and 1980's.

The changes in style, graphics, contents, play production style, advertising, and sponsors are quite interesting. I believe it is quite possible to see how the Festival has grown in fame and fortune by looking through these playbills.

Some Canadian and international actors of note who have played Stratford and are represented in these playbills include, in no particular order: Fiona Reid, Maggie Smith, Jonathan Crombie, Bruno Gerussi, Dinah Christie, Christopher Plummer, William Shatner, Michael Learned, Gordon Pinsent, Lorne Greene, Hume Cronyn, Cynthia Dale, Jessica Tandy, William Hutt, and Loreena McKennitt (music).

I have tear out pieces from what was probably a larger playbill or program for the years 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992, and 1993, if the winning buyer would like them. Also included with the collection are many ticket stubs from the productions, some from the 1970's, but pretty much all from the 1980's onward. T are also inserts with some of the programs of a varied nature. The box the playbills came in also included a copy of each of the plays in paperback form and I am selling them in several separate listings.

This collection has given me cause to stop and think about the person who owned them, and how he/she must have enjoyed attending this noted theatrical Festival for over 40 years. The gap year (1959) is a mystery - an illness, a lack of funds, family responsibilities, travel elsew?
