From 1965 through 1968, Safford campaigned one of the most feared cars in Northern California, the “Gotelli Speed Shop” Top Fuel dragster. In 1969, Safford switched classes again and piloted his first Funny Car, the “Stone, Woods & Cook” Mustang, running the Coco-Cola Cavalcade of Stars circuit. One year later, Safford switched seats to drive the Mr. Norm’s Super Charger Dodge Funny Car. Safford was the first funny car driver to record a 7 second run when he ran 7.04 ET at the 1970 NHRA Spring Nationals. Soon after that season, he purchased the operation and continued as the owner and driver of the team until 1981, when he retired from driving in to devote more time to his performance parts business in Chicago.
