TWO LEAVES FROM 14th - 15th CENTURY DOMINICAN ANTIPHON ITALY, circa 1400 Manuscripts on Parchment Both Sides, With Illuminated Capitals They are currently protected under non-glare glass, narrow antique-gilded wooden frames, and matted. Board backs are set for easy removal to permit occasional reversing of the images (t are four). The vellum/parchment is in quite good condition, though no longer the original bright off-white. Each page has seven lines of text and music, the latter of five red lines each. The neumes and texts are in black. In addition to the enlarged illuminated capital letters t are frequent smaller notations (in red) for the singers. The colors of the Capitals alternate red or blue. Medieval music notation used neumes, which lacked the timing-flags of modern notation. Antiphonal Books were intentionally large, as several singers grouped together would follow the music and service, sharing one book. (These fine examples came to North America from Folio Fine Art, London, nearly fifty years ago. Their affirmation of the date and provenance is provided). Glazed area 16 x 20 inches (40.5 x 51 cms), exposed area 9 x 13.5 inches (23 x 34 cms). At the buyer's option, the parchment leaves can be shipped without the frames and glazing (with reduction in S&H costs). I invite your questions. NOTE ! T IS A RESERVE PRICE FOR read more
