Our example has the colophon in the First (uncorrected) State with the misspelling "duerniorem" in the register. The word was corrected to "duernionem" in the 2nd issue. (No copies of this rare 1st issue are currently listed for sale on the internet. Two copies of the more common 2nd issue are listed at $6600 and $7500). The volume is printed in the celebrated Aldine italic and Greek letter (Greek passages are copious, sometimes occupying entire pages). This 1515 Gellius is one of the celebrated Aldine editions of the ancient classics issued by the printing office started by Aldus Manutius (1449-1515) in 1494 in Venice. The Aldine Press is famous in the history of typography, among other things, for the introduction of italics.
