1582 George Buchanan Scoticarum History of Scotland This is an extremely important and rare item ! I believe this to be an original 1582 Rerum Scoticarum Historia by George Buchanan, rebound by Carss & Coy Bookbinders in Glasgow, Scotland for the library of Philip Sydenham, 3rd Baronet of Brimpton, England. Indications to support my beliefs are: my first image shows the title page known to be from the 1582 printing, and does not contain the De Jure Regni, which is known to be included in all printings from 1583-1700; my sixth image shows a book plate indicating the library of Sr. Philip Sydenham Baronet and my twelfth image shows the interior of the front cover which has an identification of Carss & Coy, Glasgow. Another indication it was rebound is that the first few endpapers and engraving page are slightly larger than the rest of the book's pages and it contains an engraving of George Buchanan. The covers measure 7 1/2" x 10 3/4" and the pages measure 6 7/8" x 10 1/2". The covers appear to be calfskin with embossed gilt. The front cover has scuffing and scratches as well as edge and corner wear, with small pieces beginning to chip away, the front gilt plate has completely fallen off - but has been saved in the front cover - seen in image eleven. The back cover is in nicer condition than the front, with wear, scratching and scuffing similar corner and edge wear, however the "sheen" of the skin is a bit more apparent. The spine has scuffing and wear overall and the thin leather along spine is cracking from the front cover with a 2 1/2" portion still intact and the leather of the back is cracking along spine as well, with a 3" portion intact but the covers themselves are very much intact. As photo will show, the bookplate has a portion worn away at top. Some of the interior pages have light discoloration marks and very, very light foxing but are in quite nice condition overall. Title page has very early writing that is quite faint and we are unable to decipher and a very few interior pages have written margin notations. Generally, this has to be in superb conditon for its age. This is a very important and rare work! Please eMail with any question or comment.
