"Thesaurus Linguae Romanae & Britannicae... ("Thesaurus of the Roman Tongue and the British")", Printed in London by Henry Bynneman, 1584 Size:12 by 8 inches Reff: STC 5688, 5689 & Alden 578/18, 584/16 History: Translated into English by Thomas Cooper. Cooper began this Latin-English dictionary while headmaster of Magdalen College, this work was based on additional reference sources of both lexicographers and especially on the dictionaries of Sir Thomas Elyot and Robert Estienne. It's first publishing was in 1565. The work became a standard reference and its probable though not proven that it was used by Shakespeare and other Elizabethan poets and others in the Drama field. Queen Elizabeth so very much appreciated this work that she vowed to aid in the advancement of the author's career. Cooper was made dean of Christ Church, Oxford, in 1567, dean of Gloucester in 1569, bishop of Lincoln in 1571, and bishop of Winchester in 1584. Alden notes that the dictionary includes a definition and discussion of Guiacum. This volume is disbound yet it appears to be mostly complete. The General title is missing but the dated last page is included. This would be a excellent volume to have rebound. Very rare volume. FREE SHIPPING THIS VOLUME BOUND SELLS FOR $1500- $3000 GOOD LUCK
