I am not sure exactly when this set of sixteen hand-carved elephants was made, but it was acquired sometime between 1930 and 1950 by my grandmother. They are from just over one inch to almost nine inches tall. The material is ebony with bone inlay, and the style matches old carvings from Ceylon/Sri Lanka. They are not identical - though most have the trunks curled, a few have them straight and one is raising it. All have bone inlay eyes and tusks, and all but the smallest have inlaid toenails. Five of them are missing one tusk, one is missing both, some of which was damage when they fell from a shelf in the 1971 earthquake. The surrounding wood is undamaged. Two elephants are missing a toenail, and one of the medium-sized ones has a chip out of the rear that is only visible when viewed from straight behind (picture shown).
If you look at the Wikipedia listing under "Ebony", you see a carving that is extremely similar to these. (I did not put it there.) --- These will be carefully wrapped and shipped insured via Fed Ex or UPS - I will use your shipper number or service if you prefer, but will not ship using any method that does not allow insurance and a tracking number. If you are near Los Angeles, you may pick them up.
