ITEM : Up for auction is this nice little collection of all Black Americana themed Victorian Trade Cards, and yes, I do think they are NEAT from a historical perspective (please NO rude, ignorant, or smart-ass emails to me regarding the listing, as they will be deleted with no response). T are some cards I have never seen before, some are not in the best condition so please examine the photo's I provide, they are being sold AS-IS. They include Dr. Wm Hall's Balsam, a card that says STILL BATHING, a card showing a black child sitting on a bale of cotton, Button's Raven Gloss, THREE Great American Tea Company cards, an interesting card that you are supposed to HEAT to see the reason why they are leaving (I haven't tried it), T.W. Perry Clothier Rome NY, Watkins Brothers, Callahan's Bowery, Dixon's Stove Polish showing Brother Gardner.

HISTORY: On many Victorian Parlor tables, a place of honor was reserved for the Bible, family album, post card album and a huge scrapbook. In the latter were lovely pasted advertising cards which were acquired by different members of the family. When members of the family went out to shop, they were given colorful trade cards with their purchases. At the local food store, many of these cards came packaged in tins of teas and coffees. Each member of the family would have been quite delighted to receive these free cards. The color cards were the most cherished. Lithography had just been introduced and any colorful bits of paper were treasured. As family members brought new cards home, everyone became excited. The family members began to go to many different stores to see if they had any cards and if they would look nice in their books. Thus we have the beginning of trade card collecting.
