The total length of this catlinite pipe is 15-7/8" long. Catlinite or Pipestone as it is commonly referred to is a type of stone that has been used for ceremonial pipes for 100's of years. The 4-winds bowl measures 4" long and is 2-3/8" tall. This is a traditional 4-winds pipe. On our ceremonial or personal pipes, the 4 directions are represented by the 4 rings on the bowl. As legend goes each ring represents 1 direction. East-The sun rises in the east-it is the beginning of the day. North-Brings the hardships and discomforts of life-brings the cold winds of winter. South-Brings the good things of life-the warm winds of summer and the growing season. West-The sun sets in the west and brings the end of the day-also can be considered the end of life. The pipestone or catlinite that was used for this pipe is dark red over most of the pipe, but as you can see on the 2nd photo, the one side has some unique and interesting lighter areas on it. It's marks and spots like this that guarantee every catlinite pipe will be a one-of-a-kind item. The pipe is signed by "Hapan". The stem is made out of California redwood. It is decorated with deer leather fringes and beaded in traditional Sioux style. This pipe bowl has a hairline fracture w the stem enters the bowl. Because of this, it should not be used for smoking or for ceremony. The chance exists that if the pipe bowl were to get too hot, it could break because of that small fracture. It is very important for us as sellers to offer top quality items and once an item is sold to offer unbeatable customer service.
