Monumental ancient work, "Illustrium Scriptorum Religionis Societatis Iesu Catalogus" is the first bibliography of Jesuit writings by Pietro Ribadeneira (Toledo 1526 - 1611), one of its founders. He entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 18th 1540, at the age of fourteen and eight days before the approval of the order by Pope Paul III. This Anvers' edition is the first edition; in 1608, published by Plantin-Moretus. In this fantastic work the author lists not only the publications of his Jesuit collegues but gives also biographical details. At the end is a detailed list of all the Jesuit colleges around the world. E.g. in Japan t are 154 jesuits divided over 12 colleges. The Society of Jesus , (Latin: Societas Iesu, ) is a Christian religious order of the Roman Catholic Church at the service of the universal Church. Its members are known as Jesuits, and have colloquially been called "Soldiers of Christ", first, and "Foot soldiers of the Pope", second, partly because the Society's founder, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was a knight before becoming a priest. Today, Jesuits number 20,170 (with 14,147 priests), and compose the largest male religious order in the Roman Catholic Church (the Franciscan family of OFMs, Capuchins, and Conventuals has approximately 31,899 members, of whom 20,786 are priests; however, the "family" consists of multiple orders). "Illustrium Scriptorum Religionis Societatis Iesu Catalogus" is a fundamental work for scholars, researchers, and everyone interested in understanding of the origins of the Society of Jesus and the entire history of the christianity Estimated Price on International Auction Houses: $ 5500.00 - $ 6000.00 Thanks for looking and please see the imagesSee my other auctions for more great items!
