This auction is for a Spanish 8 reales cob coin made 1624 by assayer “D” (Damien Moldonado) at the Seville (Sevilla), Spain mint during the reign of Philip IV. The coin is a hefty 27.0 grams and is solidly hammered with one area being flat. This chunky, 32mm coin would be a wonderful coin for your collection due to its almost full date, which is rare for cob coins from this time period. The obverse is a well-struck example of coinage from this era. The shield of Philip IV is 70% visible and maintains most detail. The mint mark “S” is visible and the assayer “D” and the “IIII" (denoting Philip IV) are bold. Small parts of the remaining legend and 30% of the crown are visible as well. The reverse has much detail. The Greek cross is 90% boldly-visible with one-and-a-half lions and two bold castles. A small part of the legend is discernible near the date. The date, 1624, is bold on the first three digits and faint, but discernible, on the last digit.
