1641 & 1652 SPAIN, Milled 4 & COB 8 Maravedis RESALADOS This is a nice pair of coins from old Spain. One is a “Cob” Type 8 Maravedis dated 1641, and one is a Milled type 4 Maravedis dated 1652, both are what are called “Resalado” issues. They had the curious custom in Spain of not replacing their copper coins. They would just restamp and then reissue them. This led to the coins being not only worn to nothing but becoming almost unrecognizable as to date or mint. Cobs carry a certain amount of charm because of their innate crudeness. They were struck by slicing off a flan from the end of a bar of metal. Specimens with readable dates are thus more desirable as a collector’s item. On the present specimen the restamping has left a nice date. See below. Milled Type Resalados are seen much less often. Being a milled coin they probably wore better and were not “Reissued” so often. Cob Weight: 6.04 Gram, 25 Millimeter, Milled Weight: 2.61 Gram, 22 Millimeter, both Copper. Resalados are listed in Las Monedas Españolas, Del Tremis al Euro, Del 411 a Nuestros Dias, by Adolfo, Clemente and Juan Cayón. Obverses: Cob, on left, 1641 Date vertically at base of Shield. Milled, on right, 1652 Date and Madrid Mint Mark. Both show the Castles of Castile. Reverses: Reissued as VIII or Eight Maravedis on left and 4 Maravedis on right. Both show read more
