Up for auction is this First Edition 1644 copy of Thesaurus Biblicus Sue Prompuarum Sacrum by Richard Bernard (also spelled Barnard). Unpaginated, about 175 pages, 7"x10.5." Quarto, rebound in institutional purple buckram with gilt title . An ex Wolverhampton Public Library copy with: their bookplate on the front pastedown, ink stamps to title and first page of concordance, manuscript numbering to recto of title, and gilt numbering at foot of spine. Ink inscription of "Anthony Graves" on rear endpaper.Richard Bernard was a well known Puritan theologian. He was rector of Batcombe, and a moderate (liberal for the time) who spoke out against the established Anglican Church of England. He was associated with William Brewster, a passenger on the Mayflower, and John Robinson, who organized the Mayflower voyage . His daughter, Mary Bernard, married Roger Williams , who was also a Puritan dissenter (and famous for founding the colony/state of Rhode Island & for his influence on American democracy).Conditions : This item is sold "as is," so please examine the photos closely before bidding on it.
