He was born to poor parents in July 1597 in Horst, a borough of Gueldre, Germany, which is w he derived the name Horstius. He died in 1644. Horstius was the author of several prayer books. His principal works: Enchiridion Officii Divini and this work, Paradisus Animae Christianae. In addition, he edited works of Saint Bernard and Thomas a Kempis. The Paradisus Animae, which has gone through many editions in the original Latin, has always been a favorite prayer book among Catholics. The Life of Alban Butler, author of the "Lives of the Saints," tells us that he greatly preferred it to other devotional manuals, and Cardinal Henry Edward Manning (1808-1892) described it as "beautiful almost beyond compare."
