States: Saxony Mint Years: 1593, 1658, 1671 Denomination: Thaler, Half Thaler, Thaler Types: Three Brothers Thaler (Duke Christian II) / Vicariat Thaler (John George II) / John George III References: Davenport 9820, Kohl 270, Davenport 7621. Weights: 10.50gm, 7.55gm, 17.10gm Diameter: 40mm, 39mm, 41mm Material: Silver Obverse: Three Brothers. / Duke on Horse, holding large sword. / George II of Saxony. Reverse: Arms of Saxony (Three brothers Thaler) / Later arms of Saxony (John George II) / Legend: DVX • BVRGVNDIE : COMES : TIROLIS At your attention a set of three rare silver thaler fractions, all issued by the Duchy of Saxony. To cut one of these large coins was unusual even during the 16th century, but if smaller change was not available the unusual solution was practical and fair to end a transaction as agreed by both parties. Furthermore the so called clipping was applied when the payment was to be made in silver and not in countable currency. By weighting a bigger amount of coins, one could avoid the calculating of the different nominals such as daalders, stuivers, thalers or reales).
