About The Metamorphoses
The metamorphoses cover the great story's of Greek mythology and like the old testament they tell the history of earth from it's beginning.
T is a lot of similarity in the scenes with the old testament but instead of one God t is a plenitude of Gods with very human behaviour and vices, lust not the least of them. It also starts with the creation of the world but instead of God it is Zeus who takes the principal part in it. Adam and Eve are replaced by the Golden age, Cain and Abel are represented by the Iron Age, the flood is shown, ... and the description ends with Julius Caesar.
The Metamorphoses in art
In 1557 Bernard Solomon published his series of engravings and many later series depend on his designs.
In 1589 Goltzius was occupied with the design of his series and in 1602 Crispin de Passe published his splendid work.
Antonio Tempesta published his series not until 1606 but his designs were already available before Goltzius and De Passe.
Wilhelm Bauer published his series in 1641.
