[24], 544pp. [16], 527pp. [8], 551pp. [8], 552pp. [8], 552pp. Extra engraved title page to each volume included in the collation. Bound in nineteenth century morocco effect green calf, contrasting spine labels, gilt. Rubbed, with wear to extremities, fading to spines. Splits to some joints, boards are all attached thanks to rather naive re-attachment with glue and masking tape to spines/hinges by a previous owner - it is not an expert job, but has ensured a usable set. Previous owner's ink inscriptions to titles, bookplates to endpapers. Some light damp-staining towards the end of Vol II, with final leaf laid down. Lower corner of engraving and title page to Vol III with some small loss. The English translation of Plutarch's Moralia. Plutarch, c46-120 AD, Greek historian, biographer and moralist. The composition of these writings preceded that of the Lives. Roughly translating to Customs and Mores, the Moralia forms an eclectic mix of essays and collected speeches. Montaigne's Essays are indebted to Plutarch's Moralia, with more than 400 references.
