MASCLEF, François (1662-1728). Grammatica Hebraica: A Punctis Aliisque Inventis Massorethicis Libera. Paris: Apud Hieronymum Corciolani, & H. H. Colli ex Typographia S. Thomae Aquinatis, 1750. 8vo (180 x 115mm). [14], 459pp. Engraved printer’s device to title. Text in Latin and Hebrew. Two engraved vignettes of putti illustrating chapter heads. Later vellum, gilt morocco lettering label to spine; (light marginal foxing). Old ownership signature dated 1879 to title (upper right). Masclef, a noted Roman Catholic and Orientalist scholar, wrote the Grammatica Hebraica, which embodied an elaborate argument against the use of vowel-points in Hebrew Grammar. The first edition of this work was published in 1716 and almost immediately called forth a defense from the Abbot Guárin, a learned Benedictine monk. In the year 1731 a second edition was published at Paris which contained answers to Guárin’s objections, with the addition of grammar of the Syriac and Samaritan languages. An important, rare 18th century book of Hebrew Grammar and a chief work of Masclef. We specialize in rare and antiquarian books. Please take a look at our other listings as well! (#D198)
