4 1/2" High x 4 3/4" Wide 3 lbs 2 oz Quite similar to those illustrated in the Schiffer "Brass Book" as well as numerous volumes on the subject of period metalware and interior furnishings. This striking example exhibits some wonderful character in it's original design and current stare of being in a lovely patina. This original example, being circa 1700-1750 is either an item of Dutch manufacture which was exported to England , or an English example itself. Aforementioned Schiffer publication points a reference on page 376 (fig. C) to an English example quite similar to those, the text mentioning that the craftsmanship is similar to candlesticks of the 1690-1750 period. Lovely original signs of construction throughout this example. The piece was originally sand cast and then lathe turned to produce fine banding elements. Take a moment to view the images for specific details both on the mortar and pestle in this early set. Mortar and pestles have been used to grind food, drugs, and chemicals since before recorded history. While the 12th through the 16th century produces more elaborately decorated bronze examples, the close of the 17th century and onward to the early 18th century had proven them to be predominantly cast of brass, with design variations similar to the one we have the pleasure of offering this week.
