Splendid armorial bindings with arms of Madame de Pompadour!

Lucianus of Samosata Lucien, de la traduction de N. Perrot, Sr. d'Ablancourt. Avec des Remarques sur la Traduction. Nouvelle edition, reveuë, & corrigée. Tome I [II, III].
A Paris, Par la compagnie des libraires. M.DCCVII. [1707]. Avec privilege du Roy.
A wonderful example of armorial bindings, used by the nobility and higher ranking clergy during earlier centuries to identify the books in their libraries. These bindings are highly sought after by collectors today, especially if they have as distinguished provenance as do these.
Lovely 3-volume set, bound in full contemporary leather with the arms of Madame de Pompadour on front and rear boards. Three gilt lines along edges of boards. Spine richly gilt with red and black title labels. Old ownership stamp on endpaper and title page of Jesuit college, Valkenburg.
Volume I appears to have been rebacked with preservation of original leather. Vols. 2 and 3 not, and accordingly have a bit more damage at spine ends. Bindings are worn, and vol. 2 especially is splitting. Still, a very nice set with a distinguished provenance.
Jeanne-Antoinette Possoin, Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764) is one of the most famous courtesans in French royal history, and was mistress of Louis XV. She had a strong interest in literature, and left an extensive library which was auctioned off after her death.
Lucian of Samosata (circa 120-180) was a rhetorician and and satirist in the Roman empire. He referred to himself as Syrian, but spent much of his time in Greece, and likely died in Athens. A large number of works has been attributed to him, including essays, dialogues, and satirical symposia; it is unlikely that all are by him. The present volumes include most of his best-known works.
