Over 190 Years Old... Very Early Edition of an 18th Century Classic! The Spectator Volumes 1, 2, 5 By Joseph Addison and Richard Steele London: Printed for J. Tomson, at Shakespear's-Head, over against Katharine-street in the Strand ~~1720 -- The Fifth Edition~~ ************************************** 12mos. Variously paginated. Bindings measure nearly 6 1/2 inches tall by 4 inches wide. Bound in original full calf with ribbed spines. The bindings show rubbing and wear but are sound. The spines shows a few dings or scuffs and some light surface cracking. Leather still seems supple. A sound set with generally clean text. The "Spectator" originally came out in 1711 and was written and published by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele as a daily. It became very popular with its wit and social and political satire. The issues were later bound into 8 volumes (some later editions break the volumes down differently). We offer volumes 1, 2 and 5. The first number... issue #1... came out on March 1, 1710/11. Volume 1 contains 80 numbers; volume 2 contains Nos. 81-169. Volume 5 contains Nos. 322-394. Each volume is indexed. Each volume also has a decorative woodcut headpiece as well as decorative tail pieces. Nice copies of very early issues. ************************** LIKE OLD BOOKS CHEAP?? !!!!
