Error Free - No Details 1723 1/2 P Hibernia Harp at Right on Reverse Rarity 4 - Very Scarce PCGS certified 519 coins with 64 graded AU-55 This coinage was originally struck by William Wood underRoyal Patent at his Bristol foundry for use in Ireland. However, the coinage was deeply unpopular in Ireland due to its lightweight relative to English issues. Dean Swift (aka Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels and Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin), anonymously penned the ' Drapier's Papers ', a series of pamphlets highlighting the inequity of this inferior coinage and aroused public opinion against it. Following a general boycott the coinage was withdrawn and shipped to the American Colonies for use alongside Wood's Rosa America coinage. We specialize in “Details” graded coins from PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. In the past few years, we’ve noticed a vibrant market for these type coins because they reflect drastic reductions in price over their problem free counterparts. Numismatists have the opportunity to add some rare, scarce varieties to their collection for pennies on the dollar. We’ve also noticed some misconceptions regarding “Details” grading and we offer the following philosophy from NGC for your review: “NGC Details Graded coins each receive a Details Grade that accords with the amount of detail remaining on the coin. Coins lose detail as the result of wear, which is metal loss that occurs during circulation. For that reason, Details Grades are sometimes referred to as “wear grades.” The value of a Details Grade coin is never determined by its grade alone. The severity and location of the detrimental surface condition is often just as important as the Details Grade when determining value. A Details Grade can give a strong indication of what a coin may look like and is a fundamental component of the equation when determining both condition and value” My discussions with NGC appraisers have revealed that a “details” graded coin has actually been downgraded from a higher grade because of the stated error. How that relates to Value is anyone’s guess; because, “value is in the eye of the beholder”. Don’t fall victim to the old myth that “details’ coins are worthless. Take this for example: a 1796 1/2C Fine Details by NGC sold at auction last year at Heritage Auctions, Lot 30, for $74,750; and recently, two 1794 1C Fine Details by NGC, Lots 3036 and 3050 sold for $19,975 and $28,200. Obviously the buyers didn’t think they were worthless and neither should you.
