A rare Papal document stating the forgivness of sins by the authority of The Society of Jesus. (Roman Catholic Church) Dated August 7 1729. Translated by Our Lady of MT. Carmel Church.Size - 10 inches wide X 7.5 inches tallThe following content of the document is translated from the Latin in which it is actually written. To all who read these letters, Peace and health in the Lord Jesus. We, the undersigned members of the Socity of Jesus, attest that OLIVER DELABRUYERE (FRENCHMAN) FROM THE DIOCESE OF RHEIMS has personally visited the Tombs of the Apostles Peter and Paul, the Papal Basilica, and the Apostolic See; he has participated in the Sacrament of Confession and his sin by Apostolic authority and fufillment of hes Penance, have been absolved by us. The present testimony signed and sealed with the seal of the Apostolic College of Penitents and Confessors, is hereby given as witness of this Grace. All this has been given at Rome at Saint Peter's in the year 1729 on the 20 day of February, in the Pontificate of Benedict XIII, his fifth year.LUDOVICUS RIGAUD MAJOR SEAL APPROVED 7 AUGUST 1729 MINOR SEAL The Society of Jesus The Society of Jesus ( Latin : Societas Iesu , S.J. , SJ or SI ) is a Christian male religious order of the Roman Catholic Church . The members are called Jesuits and are also known colloquially as "God's Marines" , [2 ] the latter being references to founder Ignatius of Loyola 's military background and the members' willingness to accept orders anywhere in the world and to live in extreme conditions where required. The society is engaged in evangelization and apostolic ministry in 112 nations on six continents. Jesuits work in education (founding schools, colleges, universities and seminaries), intellectual research, and cultural pursuits. Jesuits also give retreats, minister in hospitals and parishes and promote social justice and ecumenical dialogue . Absolution is an integral part of the Sacrament of Penance , in Roman Catholicism. The penitent makes a sacramental confession of all mortal sins to a priest and prays an act of contrition . The priest then assigns a penance and imparts absolution in the name of the Trinity , on behalf of Christ Himself , using a fixed sacramental formula: Dominus noster Jesus Christus te absolvat; et ego auctoritate ipsius te absolvo ab omni vinculo excommunicationis (suspensionis) et interdicti in quantum possum et tu indiges. Deinde, ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, + et Spiritus Sancti. Amen. May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you; and by His authority I absolve you from every bond of excommunication (suspension) and interdict, so far as my power allows and your needs require. [ making the Sign of the Cross: ] Thereupon, I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The essential part of the formula (the words which must be said for the absolution – and the entire Sacrament of Penance – to take effect, or, in Church law terms, be "sacramentally valid") are: "I absolve you from your sins". Absolution of sins most importantly forgives sins (and, when done before death, ensures one dies in a " state of grace ", able to eventually enter heaven); but it also allows the valid and non-sinful reception of the sacraments (especially the Eucharist at Mass ), the lawful exercise of ecclesiastical offices and ministries by laity or clerics, and full participation in the life of the Church. However, for certain especially grave sins to be forgiven and for the accompanying Church penalties to be lifted, there are formal processes which must take place along with the absolution, which must then be given (depending on the seriousness of the type of sin) either by the Pope (through the Apostolic Penitentiary ), the local Bishop, or a priest authorized by the Bishop.This formula is preceded by other short prayers similar to those used at Mass after the Confiteor .
