Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708 - 1770) Born in Heidelberg (Germany) in 1708, Ehret was a gardener by profession and practised drawer of botanical specimens from an early age. In 1733, whilst working on a commission for a banker named Loeschenkohl in Regensburg, he made the acquaintance of the Apothecary and botanist Johann Weinmann who engaged Et to paint "1,000 figures of plants" for is superb work “ Pytanthoza Iconographia” and of the physician and botanist Christoph Jakob Trew - who remained his most important patron for the rest of his life, collaborating on magnum opus Plantae selectae (1750-1773). This was the beginning of his carrier and the “ Pytanthoza Iconographia” earned him the reputation as the finest botanical artist of is era. After travelling throughout Europe, including a stay in Holland - w he worked for Linneaus - Ehret settled in England in 1736, remaining t until his death in 1770.
