Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708 - 1770) Born in Heidelberg (Germany) in 1708, Ehret was a gardener by profession and practised drawer of botanical specimens from an early age. In 1733, whilst working on a commission for a banker named Loeschenkohl in Regensburg, he made the acquaintance of the Apothecary and botanist Johann Weinmann who engaged Et to paint "1,000 figures of plants" for is superb work “ Pytanthoza Iconographia” and of the physician and botanist Christoph Jakob Trew - who remained his most important patron for the rest of his life, collaborating on magnum opus Plantae selectae (1750-1773). This was the beginning of his carrier and the “ Pytanthoza Iconographia” earned him the reputation as the finest botanical artist of is era. After travelling throughout Europe, including a stay in Holland - w he worked for Linneaus - Ehret settled in England in 1736, remaining t until his death in 1770. Resident in London, established himself as a successful teacher of botanical drawings: he became well-known as a master of flower painting: "now firmly established as a botanical artist of distinction, Ehret spent his winters teaching ladies of the nobility, and his summers painting, often travelling to record the first flowering of a new or exotic plant... He fulfilled many commissions for wealthy patrons, such as... Sir Richard Mead, royal physician... Taylor White, lawyer and treasurer of the Foundling Hospital". As well as this, Ehret famously contributed illustrations to magnificent botanical works such as Weimann’s sumptuous work “ Pytanthoza Iconographia” (1736-1745) contributing making the “ Iconographia” the masterpiece it is; the monumental C.J. Trew's “Hortus nitidissimus floribus” (1750-1786) and “Plantae selectae” (1750-1773). Ehret was one of the greatest botanical artists of his or any age. His exquisitely rendered studies certainly equal those of, for example, Pierre-Joseph Redoute. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (13 March 1683 1741) Born in Gardelegen (DE) in 1683, Weinmann was a apothecary and botanist by profession. In 1710 he settled in Regensburg and bought a pharmacy: he continued successfully managing it up to death . Weinmann focused his studies mainly on plants and his work earned him great scientific acclaim among botanists. He was a deep collector of botanical specimens. In 1736 - based on the specimens of his own remarkable collection, that contained over 9000 plants - Weinmann began to publish the “ Pytanthoza Iconographia”, a sumptuous work - that was financed by him - that can be considered one of the most important botanical artwork of 18 th century. Description of the w ork. We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from the rare first edition of " Pytanthoza Iconographia " , published in Resensburg between 1736 and 1745 . This First edition is based on Weinmann’s collection of plants and was financed by him, despite the claim on the Latin title that it was produced at the expense of the artists and engravers. Weinmann, an influential pharmacist and botanist, employed Ehret, while still in his twenties, to make the drawings in Regensberg.
