The document was issued in 1772 by the Surveyor General concerning a 1737 Land Grant given by Thomas Penn (then co-Governor of Pennsylvania) to Samuel Bethells. It states “Whereas Samuel Bethells of the County of Lancaster hath requefted that we would grant him to take up five hundred and forty Seven Acres of Land Situate in Tuskarora Gap on the West side of Susquehanna said County of Lancaster for which he agrees to pay our Use, at the Rate of Fifteen Pounds Ten Shillings current money of this Province for every Acre thereof: THESE are therefore to authorife and require thee to furvey, or cause to be furveyed unto the faid Samuel Bethells..” It goes on and ends with “GIVEN under my Hand, and the Seal of our Land-office, at Philadelphia, this 24 th day of January, Anno dom. 1737. “Thomas Penn” At the bottom is the following from the Surveyor General, “ I Do hereby Certify that the above is a True Copy of the Original read more
