[Original 274 year old books, 2 volumes complete] Fascinating correspondence between Ormonde and King Charles I, Lord John Byron (1599-1652) great, great uncle of the poet, Lord Digby, Secretary Nichols and many others taken from original letters written during the Civil War. The editor, Mr. Carte claims that he saved some of Cromwell’s letters which were “destined” to “the flames”. Several letters are published in the original French. Gives vivid accounts of battles and life in general during first and second civil wars. Carte, Thomas (1686-1754) and James Butler, Duke of Ormonde (1610-1688). Original full calf gilt lettered red morocco labels to spine, rubbed at corners and spine extremities with minor chip at head of vol. I. Leather starting to separate. Title pages bit toned otherwise leaves clean and bright. Includes the original invoice from the London bookseller, George Harding who shipped the set to A.
