Title: 1747 Bellin Map "Carte des Entrees de la Riviere de Scherbro ou Cerbera" J. N. Bellin Date and Place: c1750, , "Chez Didot..."Source: Histoire Generale des Voyages ou Nouvelle Collection de Toute des Relation de Voyages” Dimensions: 7x 10 inches; copperplate Engraving on a larger sheet Condition: VG+ , one vertical fold, as issuedDescription: L’Abbe Prevost’s “ Histoire des Voyage” was a monumental undertaking that stretched to 20 volumes, the last being done in 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution. Begun by Prevost in 1746, the work was continued by others after his death 1763. Title notes "situated on the Coast of Guinea at 6 degrees 40 minutes North Latitude". Now in Sierra Leone, this map shows the entrance to the River and notes several English settlements etc,. One, York island, is still so named, but Jamaica on Scherbro island does not appear to have survived. There is a English anchorage noted as well as an "Ancient Comptoir des Anglois"...a former trading post. To the NW of the River is "I Sombreros" where the note says that is believed there are iron mines there. Partial compass rose along bottom border Title page in facsimile if requestedThis map is from Volume “III” (Map #6) and was done by Jacques Nicholas Bellin the Elder (1703-1772) who was, among other things, the “French Royal Geographer”.--------- Also
