Fairfax, Edward. TASSO'S JERUSALEM DELIVERED: or GODFREY of BULLOIGN. An Heroic Poem. Done into English, in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, by Edward Fairfax, Gent. "The Fourth Edition, with a Glossary, and Index." (London: Printed by J. Purser, MDCCLXIX (1749)). 500pp + glossary and index.4to., bound in original calf, with ribbed spine; gilt-tooling and blind-stamped frames on covers. Title label on spine absent, but shadow legible ("FAIRFAX'S / TASSO"). Front cover cleanly detached. Pages clean, and rear hinge firm.A mid-18th century English translation of Torquato Tasso's Renaissance epic poem set during the First Crusade and the fighting between Christians and Muslims for Jerusalem. The poem enjoyed renewed popularity in the late 18th and 19th centuries, whereupon it again largely lapsed into obscurity. This is a rather early English translation, just preceding its explosion of publishing variations (usually in overly ornate Italian leather.)Cover detached, so poor, but this really the only major flaw.Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
