Herman Boerhaave (31 December 1668 – 23 September 1738) was a Dutch botanist, humanist and physician of European fame. Gerard van Swieten (May 7, 1700 – June 18, 1772) was a Dutch-Austrian physician born in Leiden. He was a pupil of Boerhaave and became the personal physician of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in 1745.
