Benjamin Martin (1704-1782) began his life as a ploughboy but soon began teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic in Guildford. He became self-taught in mathematics and astronomy and was an ardent champion of the Newtonian system. A small legacy then allowed him to travel the country giving lectures and demonstrations on natural philosophy before settling in Chichester where he taught and made optical instruments and spectacles. He soon moved on to London for more specialized instrument manufacture and writing of many popular works on mathematics and astronomy.
