A team of several artisans and carvers take several days to form a Masterpiece like this one.... Just an example of a simple flower carving and various steps to each completion process A rough gem has been sliced and a center hole was drilled. Thickness about 1.5 cm, a large silicon carbide wheel served to shape and to separate front and back petals. The individual petals are roughly modulated. The next step is done on a large diamond wheel the petals are ground deeper and the separation between high and low petals is accentuated, then the petal are grinded diagonally between to create the over lapping of them. The shape of the petals is not defined yet. With a narrow diamond wheel the separation between the petals is ground deeper. The flower gets some life. The texture of the coarse diamond wheel can easily be seen. Also the back side is carved, taking into account the overall thickness of the flower. The next step requires small diamond coated tools with a finer grit, at least 3 different shapes are used to shape the surface and the separation between the petals. The flower still looks bulky. Now a rounded and quite wide grinding tool is used for further process. The surface and also the shape of the petals is defined. This is still a coarse grinding step and the tool leaves a rough surface. Undulating the petals carefully from the front and backside. And then working on the final thickness of the petals. Working with a very thin diamond blade the separation between the petals is carved to its final depth. The petals are then grind ed with silica carbide wheels which are fashioned into exactly the same shapes as the diamond tools. Smoothing the surface first with rounded shapes, and then with narrower and sharper silicon carbide wheels. At least 2 different smoothing grits are used (400 and 600 mesh) All carving traces have to disappear on the front and back side. The shape has been ground to a thickness where it becomes translucent. Good material without cracks is required. This flower is then ready to undergo the fine grinding (1200 mesh) and final polishing step. This is the reward for several hours of work. Every step is done with utmost care, a small mistake can drain out all the hard work.
