An extremely rare sword carried by both English and American infantry officers during and after the Revolutionary war. It is the same pattern carried by German troops since 1740. It was later standardized to the 1796 pattern by the English and served in the Napoleonic wars and the American war of 1812. The early versions were almost exclusively of German mfg. and had a solid double shell guard. The standardized pattern had a hinged folding left guard to increase comfort while wearing and reduce uniform wear (the hinged guard appeared prior to the formal adoption in 1796). For your consideration, a fine example of the early version as pictured in Newmann's Swords and Blades of the American Revolution , plate #160.s. The blade was made by and deeply marked on the spine by J. J. (Johann-Justus) Runkel - Solingen (1750-1808) who exported swords to England prior to est. offices in the Holburn District of London on Tookes Ct. and Castle Street between 1783-1808. The urn pommel, shell guard and hand guard are decorated in the standard pattern. The Quillon has been broken off, this was often done deliberately as it was decorative and tended to get caught on the straps and accouterments of the uniform of the day. The sword has never been taken apart and had only minor looseness caused by wood shrinkage. The original silver double twisted wire is complete and in good condition. Much of the gold gilding has been worn away by normal use or too much love. The straight blade is 1" wide at the hilt and 32 1/4" long (38 1/4" overall length) it has no major pitting and only very minor edge nicks. It is unsharpened and has a nice grey/peppered patina. Carries all of the typical blade motives including the English coat of arms and the cipher of King George III (1760-1810). This is a rare and original short sword, which I hate to part with but circumstances dictate that I must. Bid early and often, don't miss this opportunity to own a piece of American history. All questions will be answered promptly and as completely as possible, more higher resolution pictures are available on request.
