1764 antique WEST INDIES Jamaica BARBADOS Pennsylvania .... A handsome 1764 three quarters leather bound, first edition London-published volume containing a portion of HISTORY OF AMERICA (it’s part of a set, with other volumes covering other regions of America, both north and south), this one covering primarily Pennsylvania, Hudson Bay, and much on the West Indies. This 556 page volume begins with the HISTORY OF PENNSYLVANIA (85 pages), followed by HUDSON’ BAY (55 pages). The coverage then shifts into “The History of the British and Other Islands in the American West Indies,” beginning with THE HISTORY OF BARBADOS (84 pages) then HISTORY OF SAINT LUCIA, SAINT VINCENT, GRENADINE ISLANDS, (84 pages) then MARTINICO, GUADALOUPE AND THE OTHER FRENCH CARIBBEES (36 pages,) then THE OTHER ENGLISH CARIBBEE ISLANDS (Anguilla, St. Martin, “Berbuda,” St. Christopher’s, Dominica, Nevis, and Antigua) (55 pages), followed by a few pages each on MONTSERRAT and “TABAGO,” BERMUDAS and THE BAHAMA ISLANDS. JAMAICA rates at nice long coverage at 122 pages. CUBA gets 20 pages, and 42 pages to the combined HISPANIOLA, or ST DOMINGO, TRINIDADO, MARGARITY, PORTO-RICO, AND OTHER SPANISH ISLANDS IN AMERICA. The final 28 pages are devoted to SEQUEL TO THE HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, following up on the information of an earlier volume….. The book is volume 41 of the major 18 th century work of scholarship -- AN UNIVERSAL HISTORY, FROM THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF TIME …. an 65-volume universal history of the world published in London between 1747 and 1768. Contributors included George Sale, George Psalmanazar, Archibald Bower, George Shelvocke, John Campbell and John Swinton. It was one of the first world’s first works to attempt to unify the history of Western Europe with the stories of the world's other known cultures. Printed in old English lettering (major difference: the letter “s” looks an awful lot like the letter “f.”). Volume 41: THE MODERN PART OF AN UNIVERSAL HISTORY, FROM THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF TIME. COMPILED FROM THE ORIGINAL WRITERS, George Sale, et al., London: T. Osborne, C. Hitch, A. Millar, et al., 1764. 5 x 8 inches. 556 pages. Three quarters leather binding over marbled paper covered boards, five raised bands on spine. Boards lightly rubbed. Leather labels present on spine. Exterior spine joints were questionable. I repaired them with layers of dyed Japanese art paper. Color match not exact, but hinges and binding now solid. The whole process should be reversible, as I used wheat paste glue Page edges dyed red. Top corner torn from half title page. Antique library bookplate, and previous owner’s antique bookplate on front pastedown. The bookplate, by the way, indicates that the owner of the book was Thomas Smythe, of Charleston, South Carolina. Thomas Smyth was an influential Irish-born clergyman who spent much of his career as pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of Charleston. He authored dozens of books and was a powerful preacher, though also an advocate of slavery during the Civil War times. As were, of course, the great majority of Southerners, churchmen or not….. Smyth’s embossed seal on title page and final page of text. T are no other marks of ex-library ownership, as far as I can tell. Interior is clean and bright. Tight binding.
