This volume goes far beyond teaching grammar, simple addition and subtractions of farthings & pence; this book today virtually constitutes a compelling time capsule of socio-economic history in England prior to the birth of America. It begins with Four plates/pages of alphabets, including: "flourishing", a "secretary's hand", aa "Round hand", and the "Italian hand"; proper forms for invoicing barrels of indigo and pimento, etc.; preparing your cases of haberdashery for export, with rates of wharfage, rates of watermen and husbands of ships. Also "OARS" to various other locations, with fares, and rates for carrying various commodities. Unusual "mensurations" (measuring methods) include superficial measure, flooring, roofing, wainscoting, tapering timbers, brick work, and much more; Also Gauging copper, casks, couches of malt and other unusual objects. Re: money: There is a description of British coinage and its metal content, right down to the "groat," and including ancient pieces of gold ("angel" or "crown" gold); also "imaginary money" -- money for which there is no coin, e.g. the pound, the mark, the noble. Includes a "table exhibiting the value of any number of Portugal pieces of gold, in English pounds and shills." The chapter on globes and the section on globes includes a wonderful copper plate: "Plan Of The Compass" (see photo).
