You are bidding on a very beautifully engraved and extremely rare 100% original and authentic 240 year old antique map of the above year and region from the extremely rare and large format edition of Guthrie's Geography. This map is not from the small format uncolored map version of the atlas but rather from the large format and original hand colored edition. Most of the maps in the book are attributed Thomas Kitchin and/or were published under his supervision so you may see a name (example John Barber) instead of Kitchin. I have researched these versions of his maps and I cannot find any other examples available online or anyw else so these maps are extraordinarily rare and valuable. This is an investment grade map and will continue to rise in value over time due to the extreme scarcity of the atlas and the map. The map is 100% authentic and is not a reproduction. The price of this particular atlas complete sells for between $7,000 and $10,000 and individual maps sell for many hundreds of dollars. Cartographer/Publisher: Thomas Kitchin: One of England's most productive mapmakers of the last half of the eighteenth century, Thomas Kitchin both engraved and published most of his own work. And from his premises at the Sign of the Star, situated at Holborn Hill, he also sold artists' materials and wrote and published books of instruction of the various mediums of artistic expression, such as oil painting, watercolour composition, and engraving and etching. As a cartographer, Kitchen is highly respected for his set of English county maps (issued in 1764) and his 1773 General Atlas of the World. Of equal importance, however, are the many maps he created for individual commissions, such as books of travel and exploration. The larger maps, such as this original example entitled. "A General Map of the East Indies", would often be folded to accommodate the smaller size of the book. General Description: 1. Attractive map of region, with details of cities, rivers, land masses, and waterways . Beautifully detailed cartouche. Notice the incredibly beautiful and detailed original outline hand coloring. The map depicts the region in considerable detail and includes both political and topographical information. The map is far more beautiful than my pictures show and is in excellent condition. The flash from my camera when taking the photos may make the map appear a little lighter in color than it really is. 2. The map is in excellent condition considering the age of the map. Printed upon fine, hand-made eighteenth century laid paper. Folds as issued. Slight edge wear to w the map was attached to the book. The overall size of the map sheet is large at approximately 14.5 inches by 13.5 inches. The map will look extremely beautiful when matted and framed for display. 3. The map is a 100% original and genuine antique map. 4. Original maps from this atlas sell for many hundreds of dollars. My starting price for this map is far below the full value of the map. Map Collecting: Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab people's attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago! These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well. Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase over time. Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies. Why spend the money for something like ...
