First such gathering of UNITY in America! This too is covered in ! A true landmark event in the history of the American Revolution...the British army marching on and occupying Boston! To many historians this marks the beginning of the Revolutionary War, as this is the arrival of an occupying force, creating a standing Army among citizens. This changed everything in the revolution! This very special newspaper, The Boston Chronicle, October 3, 1768 has a very first report on the infamous event of the British troops marching into and occupying Boston! The British soldiers marched through King's street on Saturday, October 1st, 1768, and this newspaper is from Monday, October 3rd, 1768, so it contains the very first report possible, AND IT IS IN A BOSTON NEWSPAPER, right w it happened!! are some highlights from the BACK PAGE report... "Friday,...the Romney and the rest of his Majesty ships of war, with the troops from Halifax, consisting of the 14th, 29th, and 59th regiments...came to anchor before this town. On Saturday, the troops were put on board the armed schooners...and at 12 o'clock were landed on the wharf. From the wharf they marched into King's street; and from thence into the common." This is a very first report on the arrival of an armed British occupying force in America! Yes, these are the very same soldiers(the 29th regiment), and that is the very same street w the Boston Massacre would end up occuring! FDR's famous quote, "a day that will live in infamy," was first applied to, OCT 1, 1768 as "a day which marks with infamy." This day is COVERED IN THIS PAPER! In one of the most famous and elaborate of Paul Revere's engravings (pictured as a reference below), it shows the arrival of the red-coated British troops. Revere wrote that the troops "formed and marched with insolent parade, drums beating, fifes playing, and colours flying, up King Street. Each soldier having received 16 rounds of powder and ball." Troops of the 29th, unable to secure lodgings in town, pitched tents on the common. The stench from their latrines wafted through the little city on every breeze "...with two pieces of cannon, joined them in the common w the 29th regiment encamped; the 14th regiment marched in the evening to Fanueil-Hall....On Sunday, a part of the 14th regiment were quartered in the Town House. The detachment of the 59th, and the train were quartered in some stores on Griffin's wharf." --And thus began the occupying of Boston by the British army...setting in motion events that would change the world! How did the Bostonians feel? Well they held an historic meeting(against the British law and wishes) of 96 nearby towns to voice their objections and express their rights! This paper has the reporting of that meeting!! Against British tax policy... "with the sole and express purpose of raising a revenue in America," and how they did not want quartering soldiers, and a standing army coming to Boston... "they further declare that as Englishman they have an aversion to an unnecessary standing army, which they look upon as dangerous to their civil liberty." An unbelievable paper with FIRST reporting on the monumentous event of the actual marching of the British soldiers on Boston, and of how and why the citizens of Boston were up in arms during this whole time period. This paper is incredible. No other newspaper carries this report any earlier, and this paper is most desireable as it comes from the place w it occured!
