For sale today is a piece of history.I have done many hours of research on this indenture to try and trace its history.T are several signatures on this document that are very notable. The first would be Edward Hawke ,1st Baron Hawke. He has a very extensive naval history for king george 111.He joined the navy in 1720 at the age of 15.His first battle was at the battle of Toulon in 1744.During the war of the Austrian Succession he was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1747 and in the same year captured six ships of the french squadron in the bay of Biscay in the second battle of Cape Finisterre. Also in the seven year war Hawke replaced Admiral John Byng as commander in the mediterranean in 1756.On nov 20 1759 Hawke won a sufficient victory at Quiberon Bay against the french.Hawke was made Vice Admiral of Great Britain in Nov of 1765>Hawke was made First lord of the Admiralty in dec 1766 and served untill jan 1771 and was made Baron in 1776. The second signature is of Sir Philip Stephens First secratary of the admiralty 1763 to 1795 later becoming Lord comissioner of the british admiralty between 1795 to 1806.Stephens is notable because of his friendship with Captin James Cook.Cook named the pacific atoll in honour of stephens daughter caroline.Which is Caroline Island. Also t is Mount Stephens and Port Philp named by Vancover in honour of Stephens.Mr Stephens was made Baronet and apointed one of the Lords Of the Admiralty on march 17 1795. The next would be Piercy Brett also a friend of Captin James Cook.Cook named Cape Brett in New Zealand in honour of him.Brett was also one of the lords of the Admiralty in 1769. .Now the most intresting I think is the name of Andrew Oliver lieutenant Govorner of Massachuestts. When the british parliament passed the stamp act Oliver made himself odious to the patriotic party by accepting the office of the distributor of the stamps. On aug 14 1765 Oliver was hanged in effigy at was is known at the liberty tree. And you all know the rest of the story Boston tee party ect. Thanks for looking
