Recent half calf, with original, if tatty, marbled wrappers bound in, pages uncut repair to fore-edge margin of title and slight loss to fore-edge margin of three plates, overall clean and bright and in very good original condition. An octavo volume, it measures approximately 19cm (7½") x 12cm (4¾") x 3cm (1¼"). Pagination pp. 288, complete with 9 folding engraved plates. Sun Tzu is traditionally believed to be the author of Art Militaire des Chinois , sometimes called the Sun Tzu, an influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy considered to be a prime example of Taoist strategy. Sun has had a significant impact on Chinese and Asian history and culture, both as an author of the Art of War and as a legendary figure. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Sun's book grew in popularity and saw practical use in Western society, and his work has continued to influence both Asian and Western culture and politics. A revised edition published 1773, of Amiot's 1772 translation of Sun Tzu into French (the first time it had been translated into a European language) entitled Art Militaire des Chinois .
