This item is a wonderful,original document dated 1778 where Richard Codman has written a letter regarding correspondence needed and the fact that he has not yet caught the smallpox, but expects to.....signed on back of first page, Richard Codman. Letter is single page, double sided, overall very good condition.Richard Codman, the brother of John Codman, was known for his wit, charm, and terrible business sense. He was described by later generations as “fond of society, careless in money matters, but with a nice taste in pictures and statuary.” See the John Codman letter also listed this week." We have had an account current open with Richard Codman, merchant, at Paris, since the ytar 1794, old style, and have always considered said Codman as copartner of the house of John and Richard Codman ; further, we have never had any knowledge that the said house of John Sf Richard Codman is dissolved."
