A natural history of English song-birds : including such foreign birds as are usually brought over and esteemed for their singing: Their proper Management, Diseases, and Cures. A new edition, expanded and corrected (first, 1737), charmingly illustrated with clearly-impressed engraved plates depicting the cock, hen & eggs of each species, with invaluable pointers on breeding, providing nest materials, and nutrition. Alongside the more usual inhabitants of hedgerow and hillside is a lengthy section on canaries, here newly expanded, which includes advice on choosing a canary:'For health, take a bird that appears with life and boldness, standing like a Sparrow-hawk 'Originally produced in a very small edition, being the first British bird book to have coloured plates, this later edition, featuring the same plates as in the 2nd edition but in mirror image, with revised text, was available in both a luxury colored edition and the present black-and-white.
