The anvil is marked as follows: "PETER WRIGHT, PATENT, SOLID WROUGHT" (in the shape of a circle), and the weight marks,"1 2 10", (which is the English Stoneweight system for 178 lb.). This anvil features a nice long thin horn. T is the letter "H" stamped on the front foot which may be an inspectors mark. Peter Wright & Sons of Dudley, England has secured the reputation as the most well known quality anvil maker in the world. They have accomplished this reputation by having been in business over 200 years and assuring customers that every anvil that left Constitution Hill Works (the plant name in England), is not only the outcome of the very latest in the way of scientific invention, but that each of those articles has left behind it the whole experience of a couple of centuries. Peter Wright used the finest wrought iron they could find and were faced with the finest quality Sheffield Steel. They claimed that "Wright's Anvils Outlast All Others", and that every anvil is most carefully tested before leaving the works. Information credited to Richard Postman's book, Anvils In America . Signed copies of this interesting and informative book are available. Please write if you are interested in purchasing your own copy. This Peter Wright was the next style made after 1860. This is noted because Peter Wrights made after 1860, "the horn was a little longer and they were more uniform in shape with smooth blending curves under the horn and heel and down both sides." Because this anvil has a single face plate and Does NOT have the word "ENGLAND" stamped on it, the date of manufacture should be before the late 1890's. This anvil would certainly make any blacksmith's day. It is an excellent size for any beginning or experienced blacksmith. It has an excellent rebound and real nice ring you would expect from a Solid Wrought Iron anvil. This anvil would also make a great addition to any collection. The measurements are: overall length 27 3/8", face 4 5/8" x 15 7/8", horn 11 1/2", hardie hole 1 1/8", pritchel hole 11/16", height 10 7/8", base 10 1/8" X 10 7/8", weight 175 lb. Don't miss this chance to own it, you won't be disappointed or your money back less return shipping. Business to business shipping rates are reasonable. Please include your zip code when writing for a quote. BUYERS BEWARE : From first hand experience I have found that older anvils can have problems hidden under years of built up rust or paint. These problems can include cracks, repairs, defects and even bondo or body putty. Most of the time even the sellers are not aware of these faults because they sell the anvils as found or hardly clean them. This results in some buyers being unpleasantly surprised with problems after paying hundreds of dollars for what they thought was a "good" anvil. Even worse, the buyer may likely find out t is no recourse for the problem because the anvil was sold with no guarantee. To prevent this from happening to our customers, we clean our anvils thoroughly to detect any faults and describe them accurately when we place them for sale. Matchlessantiques can confidently assure our customers that they can forget the worry and get what they pay for when buying from us. We offer a money back satisfaction guarantee on all anvils, less the shipping costs. Buy your anvils wisely and get what you pay for.
