1780 ENGRAVING D'HERCULANUM MYTHOLOGY SATYR BACCHUS Herculaneum, the ITALIAN city counted 5000 inhabitants. It was a residential city, with the richest villas facing the sea. At the time of eruption of Vesuvius, August 24 79 AD, it was buried under a thick layer of lava. It was found in 1711. Excavations began at Herculaneum in 1747 and reproductions of the paintings became very popular as models in the decoration of 18th century drawing rooms. The ORIGINAL engraving being offered came from " 1780 LES ANTIQUITES D'HERCULANUM ", PRINTED IN PARIS. Printed on heavy rag paper of the period with sharp dark lines to create the images.
