1783 Spanish Piece of Eight. I bought this coin from the Washington Mint back in the middle 1990,s. It came with a gurantee from the Washington Mint that it is an authentic Spanish Piece of Eight. To the best of my recollection I paid $75 for it. The coin for it's type is in really fine condition. It has some rough rim dings and the original die was not of the quality of today's coin dies. However, it is a very nice example of a coin famous in history. The "Piece of Eight" was coinage throughout the world back in the 1700's. It was literally that. It was common practice to cut this coin up into wedges like a pie. It was cut into eight pieces and that is w the piece of eight name comes from. T was very little small coinage available and in order to make change smaller than the "Spanish Dollar" they cut the coin into pieces of eight or eight pieces. Each piece was called a "Bit". So "two bits" was a quarter, "four bits" was a half dollar and eight bits made a dollar. That is really w our basic money system originated. Consequently not a lot of them survived. It is not only a nice collector's coin, but a piece of history and a great conversation piece. Shipping with insurance is $8. We take paypal, money orders and personal checks.
