Here is a neat 1786 Maris 17-b New Jersey Colonial copper. This is the so called PLUKIBUS reverse variety which lists at a huge premium to a generic type New Jersey. Most of the major obverse detail can be seen although the date is "blurry". The reverse detail that is seen is limited to a weak shield outline and IBUS * UNUM. The obverse attribution is easily confirmed. The plow beam is straight, there is a coulter, the horse ears are completely under AE, the final "A" is far from the beam, and the date numerals match variety 17 with most of the "6" showing. No other possible matches but 17. Guaranteed obverse 17. All obverse 17 varieties list at premium prices relative to a generic 1786 New Jersey variety. The only known reverse die pairings with obverse 17 are J, K, and b. The upper right corner of the shield has a relatively high peak and coupled with its position relative to S * U rules out J and K. This reverse is either b or a heretofore unknown pairing with obverse 17. Guaranteed to be reverse b OR ths coin is a NEW VARIETY. Much more likely to be Maris 17-b.This is the famed PLUKIBUS variety. Unfortunately the "open" topped R which is the keystone feature of the variety is only very faintly seen.
