This over 223 year old original antique engraving is taken from the 3rd edition of the world famous"Encyclopaedia Britannica", edited by the publisher Macfarquhar and, after his death, by Dr. George Gleig, printed by Bell and Macfarquhar, in Edinburgh, Great Britain, 1788 - 1797. The Encyclopædia Britannica (Latin for "the British Encyclopædia") is a general English-language encyclopaedia published today by Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., a privately held company. The articles in the Britannica are aimed at educated adult readers, and written by a staff of about 100 full-time editors and more than 4,000 expert contributors. It is widely regarded as the most scholarly of encyclopaedias. This third edition of Britannica, published from 1788 - 1797, reached 18 volumes with 14,579 pages, and 542 plates and began to involve a number of experts and professors of Edinburgh University; it involved fields of research, which were not considered yet in the contemporaneous dictionaries and encyclopaedias, and became the model for all the following editions up till the XXth century.
